Blinded by the Light: Siamese Hips' DIY Psychedelic Rock Experience
It's a fine line between mesmerizing and distracting. On one hand, you want the show to be unique and engaging. However, too much of a good thing can be daunting and take away from the music. So, on which side of this line does Siamese Hips stand?

For those unfamiliar with the band, Siamese Hips is a relatively new psychedelic rock band from Fort Worth, Texas. I had the pleasure of experiencing their live show this past weekend at the recently reopened Cicada music venue (formerly known as MASS).
The band's journey has been intriguing. Formed during the pandemic, they released their first single, "Analysis Paralysis," in 2020, followed by "Lazy" in 2022. I've thoroughly enjoyed both singles, but I can't help but express my eagerness for them to release a full-length album soon.
This longing to hear more of their music was the primary motivation for attending their show. Let's face it, persuading a father of a three-year-old like myself to make the drive to Fort Worth (from Dallas) for an 11 PM concert start is no easy task.
No matter the challenges, there I was, beer in hand, eagerly waiting as the room gradually filled with an atmospheric fog, setting the stage for Siamese Hips' performance. As the band prepared to take the stage my eagerness was heightened by the whispers of fellow concert-goers who had heard of, or witnessed their performance in the past.
And then, the moment arrived. The lights dimmed, and the crowd's collective excitement surged as Siamese Hips emerged, shrouded in an ethereal glow. As the first notes of their music reverberated through the venue, the carefully choreographed lights burst to life, perfectly synchronized with the rhythm and energy of each song.

However, while the light show was undeniably mesmerizing, there was a delicate balance at play. As the fog thickened and the lights intensified, there were moments when the individual band members seemed somewhat obscured. While this could have been a deliberate choice to maintain an aura of mystique, I couldn't help but wonder if a more balanced approach would have allowed for a deeper connection between the musicians and the audience.
Finding that equilibrium between the spectacle of the lights and providing more intimate glimpses of the talented individuals behind the performance could enhance the overall experience even further. It’s worth mentioning, but is in no way a deal breaker.
While Siamese Hips' DIY light show is already undeniably impressive, one can't help but wonder what they could achieve with a more extensive lighting budget and/or a dedicated crew.
The potential for additional gear and professional assistance could elevate their live performances to new heights, providing a more immersive experience for the audience. With the right resources, I think they could create some stunning settings for their music. If they can create what they have with just three band members, then it’s easy to let your imagination run wild with possibilities once they add a crew.

For now, however, let's set aside the daydreaming and focus on the reality. The three-piece psychedelic rock outfit known as Siamese Hips delivers an impressive live show that is both visually and musically captivating in its current form. While it was undeniably satisfying to hear the familiar tracks I already knew, the true delight came from experiencing the unreleased songs that are being prepared for their upcoming record (I hope).
Initially, my intention in attending the show was to quench my thirst for more of Siamese Hips' music. However, to my surprise, the opposite occurred. Their performance only served to intensify my longing for the release of their new music.
Now, let's return to the question of where Siamese Hips falls on the spectrum between mesmerizing and distracting. The honest answer is that you'll need to witness their live performance firsthand to form your own judgment. The band's ability to strike that delicate balance is best appreciated in person, as words can only convey a fraction of the experience. Only by immersing yourself in their dynamic presence can you truly appreciate the magic they create.
Their live show is an intricate fusion of dazzling visuals and engrossing music that creates a symphony for the senses. They seem to have a knack for crafting an otherworldly atmosphere that lures you into their sonic realm, leaving you transfixed and wanting more.
As I eagerly await the release of their full-length album, let us not forget that the true essence of Siamese Hips can only be fully grasped by embracing the live performance. So, go, discover them for yourself, and don’t be afraid to go into the light.
