Please, Get Jane Leo Off of This Stage
"What happened?" and "Why am I so disappointed?" are just a few of the thoughts I had while walking back to my car after the Jane Leo concert in Deep Ellum, TX.
I’ve been a fan of Daniel Leopold for years now, specifically his indie rock project Leopold and his Fiction. Daniel has always been an incredibly unique writer and performer, with a style that creates compelling music both sonically and visually.
Moreover, I genuinely believe he possesses one of the best and most compelling vocal ranges and control among modern indie vocalists.
So, when I learned that he teamed up with Jane Ellen Bryant to create a new project called Jane Leo, I was thrilled. While rooted in indie rock, the duo's music is more suited for the dance floor than a mosh pit. Instead of a live drum-kit, they employ drum machines and loops to maintain rhythm, with Jane on keyboard and synth, and Daniel on guitar. They take turns on lead vocals and backups, creating a diverse sound from a minimalist approach.
Their self-titled debut album is more than worthy of your attention.
However, the issue arises when I question why Jane Leo is performing in this rundown Deep Ellum venue (that shall remain nameless). Once a famous music venue, it has sadly let itself go, disappointing its patrons (at least this one, anyway). The staff's rudeness and the dilapidated state of the venue depict neglect and indifference.
It's a testament to the resilience of the bands that they manage to shine despite the venue's lack of care.
With an urgent need for updates and a newfound commitment to excellence, this venue could reclaim its former glory and become a haven for music lovers once again. However, for this particular show, it was a significant letdown.
Meanwhile, Jane Leo took the stage as the opening act, delivering an incredible live performance. I usually worry that bands with unique sounds might struggle to replicate them live, but Jane Leo had no issues bringing their recorded album to life.
One of Jane Leo's standout qualities is their ability to provide a complete package experience. Their "theme" is consistently present online, and they fully commit to their personas both on and off stage, enabling listeners to fully immerse themselves in the music experience.
Their songs serve as a blissful reminder that it's possible to transcend genres and performance styles while remaining original, without resorting to something jarring that feels forced.
Jane Ellen Bryant embodies the phrase "big things come in small packages" with her stage presence. Despite her petite stature, she commands attention with her energy and charisma. Her on-stage performance exemplifies her ability to engage and entertain, effortlessly dancing across the stage and interacting with the crowd.
Her contagious enthusiasm encourages everyone to let loose and embrace the moment. Jane Ellen Bryant is a powerhouse performer who knows how to create an unforgettable experience.
While Jane brings explosive energy that lights up the room, Daniel exudes a cool, strong, and silent demeanor that metaphorically anchors the crowd, as if saying, "Don't worry, we know exactly what you want."
Daniel's understated presence provides a steady foundation, assuring the audience that they are in for an unforgettable experience. Together, their combination creates an irresistible atmosphere.
What disappoints me about this experience is watching a great band perform in a venue that feels like it's barely trying. We all work hard for our money, and the bands work hard to create incredible shows. It often feels like both the band and the audience have to settle for whatever they can get when it comes to music venues. Both groups deserve better.
Fans should feel that they received the full value of their ticket purchase. Regardless of the band's performance, they should be able to leave and say, "wow, that was a great venue.” rather than “what was up with the door guy” or “why was the bartender so rude?”
Similarly, Jane Leo's talent and artistry deserve to be showcased on a grander stage, one that matches the magnificence they bring to their writing and performances. While their captivating presence can ignite even the most lackluster rooms, there's no denying that Jane Leo's music would truly flourish in venues that share their obsession with attention to detail.
Their vibrant sound and powerful stage presence are deserving of a setting that aligns with their talent, enabling them to reach a broader audience and create a truly immersive experience that leaves no doubt about their ability to command a stage.
This is a heartfelt call to all venues and bookers: take a moment to listen to Jane Leo and help elevate them to these stages. It's time for Jane Leo to step into the spotlight they deserve, performing on stages that match their remarkable musicality and amplify their impact on the world of music.
Let's give them the platform they deserve, and together, we can contribute to their journey as they continue to leave their mark in music.
